Mariah had a bigger peak in US, more albums sold, bigger hits (Madonna doesn't have one, let alone 2 Song of the Decades), and Mariah has won in the US ever since her debut.
Madonna is much bigger worldwide but on US Mariah was the bigger artist. Why do you think they have the same amount of RIAA album certifications despite Madonna debuting 7 years earlier and Mariah slaughtered her on the all-time charts.
Madonna has no songs in the All-Time Hot 100 Chart and she only has one album in the All Time Billboard 200 Chart and it's not even Top 150.
At the end of the day, Madonna sold more, nobody cares who charted three weeks more than the other on Billboard.
