Over here we just study our major and take modules related to that. So for example, I major English Literature/ Language, therefore the modules I take are things like: modern literature, gender in language etc.
And is it right that you all basically have to pay as you learn? Whereas here we take a loan out with the government to cover our tuition fees that we only have to start paying back when we're earning £21K+. We also get given student finance which is effectively free money in the form of a grant.

Because some schools believe that even though you may want to go be an engineer or a scientist, have a basic understanding of writing, humanities, and the social sciences makes you a more well rounded person and academic.
At least that's my school's philosophy. I used to find it distracting, but I've come to appreciate the reasoning. My art history class is a nice change of pace from my bio and chemistry classes. It's a different kind of learning so when I get burnt out on studying a chemistry exam, I can switch over to my art history paper and use a engage a different part of my brain.
