Writings on the Wall is kinda meh on its own, but in the context of the movie it sounds much better. It does sound a bit like a Skyfall rehash, but then again there's not much else you can do with a Bond soundtrack because it has to sound huge and dramatic. His voice definitely fit and I'm actually a fan of the falsetto. I hope Lana gets to do the next one though.
Didn't expect Blue Neighborhood here, not sure so far how I feel about it because I'm just getting into it.
Nobody Love making an appearance
I Am and Rebel Heart have some good songs. We'd have the some favorite songs off Rebel Heart if you replaced Joan with Holy Water
After the atrocities known as Gangnam Style, Thrift Shop and All About that Bass it was refreshing to find a novelty song that doesn't actually suck. Well maybe it does cause I've seen many people trashing it here but at least this one is well-intentioned and it's not all-in-your-face. A strong contender for the one-hit wonder of the year.
Family of the Year "Hero"
This song is old as hell, it was originally released in 2012. However, it was re-released late last year with a brand new video because it was featured in Boyhood as the opening song. It pretty much is a coming of age anthem so it was a perfect choice for the soundtrack.
Wiz Khalifa feat. Charlie Puth "See You Again"
First of all let me say this song is so overrated, it's a cute little song with a relatable message but let's be real 12 week at #1? Anyway I'm so thankful it exists because it kept Mariah's iconic record from being snatched by one of the most disgusting and overrated songs of all time. So yeah, I never ever cared about FF films but God bless Paul Walker!
Young Rising Suns "High"
I recall the first time I ever heard this song was in a commercial. It was a nice coincidence because I rarely watch TV anymore. The whislting and the catchy hook are nothing new, it's pretty much the standard folk-goes-pop track and it reminds me a lot of Ho Hey but it was good while it lasted.
Kelly Clarkson "Heartbeat Song"
Just when I thought Catch My Breath was Kelly's worst lead single (and video) she set the bar for a new low with this song. It's not precisely terrible but it's way below her standards and unlike Catch My Breath it has zero replay value. I don't know how on Earth she got a Grammy nomination this time (but she kept Jepsen from getting one so it's all good hihi).
Imagine Dragons "Roots"
I won't lie I expected so much more from this band's comeback. I don't think it's precisely their fault, they did their job and delivered a solid record. The problem is none of their album tracks stands out as a great single choice. As expected they failed to put a song on the radio so they tried to fix it with this quick buzz single. It was too late and it's not really that memorable tbh.
Years & Years "Desire"
First of five appearances by this band. The thing about them is their sound is completely fresh, they have a signature mixture of electropop sounds and indie elements that make them quite unique. Even so, I think this song isn't up to par with their other singles. Olly's high-pitched vocals make it sound a bit annoying and repetitive sometimes.
The All-American Rejects "There's a Place"
It's always a pleasure to hear AAR is coming back. They still are one of my favorite bands of the 2000s. After a disappointing era and a big time off they're ready to comeback but before that they released this soundtrack song as a small tease. It's nothing ground-breaking but it definitely shows they still have it. Can't wait for their next album.
Fall Out Boy "Immortals"
I'm still so mad Fall Out Boy wasted one of the best songs from their last album using it as a soundtrack for a Disney film, a very good Disney film while we're at it. I kept waiting they would re-release it with a brand new video but they kept releasing more singles and its chance to shine never came. Truly a waste.
Kodaline "The One"
All of Kodaline's songs are special in their own way but they all shine by the way they were written. This one is extremely cheesy for me but it's also very heart-warming. I wish they would find international success but their type of music just doesn't fit within the current airplay climate.
Thanks for your comments.
