Erotica shot Madonna's career in the US and American Life then killed it for good.
They did use her during ROL/Music, but her success there was incomparable to her success in Europe at the time.
I never heard Hung Up played anywhere in my entire life. 4 Minutes and Music are the only songs I can ever remember hearing from her on the radio.
Meanwhile, I was in Italy for 2 days, and at one pizzeria alone, they played FOUR songs of hers consecutively, more than I can ever recall hearing in my own home country in my entire life.

People think we're lying when we say Madonna really doesn't have that many memorable hits in US.
I knew Vogue, Music, and 4 Mintues only before joining ATRL.
Then I heard people saying songs like Like a Virgin and Hung Up were remembered classics everyone knows
We don't go around labeling music as 'gay hits' but yeah, in US the straight-appeal wins.
Why do y'all think Rap is so huge here? White people love sounding hip and cool and straight.
Drake and Lil Wayne are the type to break records for hit songs in US, while Madonna and Kylie Minogue are the type to break hit records in Europe.
You basically saying that people listen to them to seem straight and not be considered gay. Which now that I think of it sounds true. There is no pressure to listen to rap music outside America as a means of labeling oneself straight.
The only requirement for me to enjoy Born This Way (song) is to not listen to it for a long time and forgetting how it goes. Whenever that occurs (once in a blue moon) I'm ready to dance my ass off.
4 Minutes outsold every Moo single. And it also crushed Touch My Body in sales which is super embarrassing when you realize Madonna is a decade older than Moo.
