When I met Carly there were a bunch of teenagers, 20 something hipster gays with their hags, 30 something feminist nerds (wearing jem and the holograms shirts and the like), and old gay couples. Was AMAZING!
Not many, but seeing as it was both a commercial (didn't even make the year-end top 40) and critical (not Grammy nominated despite featuring two iconic, acclaimed artists) failure, that's probably more other artists being cautious than it is Rihanna being ~forward-thinking.
Carly had 0 Grammy noms as well. FFS is on most year end lists with BBHMM.
But since the Grammys are a valid criterion, and Rihanna has 8 Grammys, how is her music terrible and generic?
Didn't Carlos admit to making the album specifically to cater to critics? Not surprising since her tea house meet and greet had less guests than Karmins McDonalds parking lot audience.
She is an amazing lyricist. Singing about drugs doesn't mean a song is good, but it doesn't mean it's bad either. When you mock closed-mindedness just to end up falling into it yourself.
She needs work. "I'm not on drugs, I'm just in lurve!" is a very embarrassing lyric

The Grammys' opinions on pop music is worthless at best. They nominate and reward trash songs all the time and fail to look beyond what gets played on the radio.
