Lyrically, she goes more for illustrating a concept than making her lyrics truly beautiful or potent, I can give you that.

The videos she makes are creative and thought out, but I don't know how you could make a "smart" music video. But I would consider Bad Romance, one of the most famous music videos of the 2010s a smart video for the success and acclaim it garnered.

She's never really cared about her image tbh, she's done what she's wanted when she's wanted and I admire that. She could've had better PR at times, yes, but I don't think an "image" can be indicative of one's intelligence.

Two eras: BTW, which did serious damage to her brand (though it didn't flop statistically b/c she was too big) and ARTPOP. The last time she released a true smash she was 23. She's about to turn 30.

BR is a great video but GUY is stupid. It's too long. The actual song it's promoting is buried in 15 minutes of bs. It's cringeworthy (the Housewives, Andy Cohen). She fired her team because they wanted her to look more appealing and continue doing stuff in the vein of her hits...only to try to serve Poker Face meets Paparazzi while being photoshopped within an inch of her life. Her team actually knew how to execute it properly. All of these decisions were stupid.

I do like that she does what she wants, when she wants, but she doesn't do it well (or smartly) so it's all for naught.

I was thinking about how many people the album cover alone truly probably turned off. Little things like that throughout the era that did great damage in the longrun probably.

I wouldn't take back the era though. Best era in Pop history. It really was the perfect example of someone doing what they want and not giving a ****.

I agree with Nicole that her marketing isn't always the best, and if she was going for or wanted success with certain elements of ARTPOP and BTW she definitely should've handled it better, but I just don't think she cared. She cared when people started dropping her during ARTPOP like she said, but she's always been #MusicNotTheBling so I can't really hold it against her, especially considering how volatile the music business is.

But Lady Gaga is known for being ugly, weird and gay, so I don't know get how it was "the worst publicity possible". Let's not act like she wasn't that when she was smashing with Bad Romance, Alejandro and Telephone.

She was getting all the attention for the stupid things she was doing (i.e. the 3D devil-ish makeup, living in her Grammy egg for 2 days, etc).
