Needs, wants and demand are 3 different things.
Feeling deprived is where the needs come from. When there is recession, depression,... in the country that's when people are fleeing from reality in entertainment.
Wants depends on culture, upbringing, preference,... Some want a pop girl, some want a metal band,...
Demand is when you can back a want with money. Rising the minimum wage has influence in the amount of money you can spend on the already existing needs or wants. However when there was no need or want, there won't be demand.
A lot of the appeal of Katy's brand is in her rags-to-riches story. That doesn't mean a thing to Europeans supported by the state to develop, to excel,... without depending on dad's wallet. However it gives hope to Americans stuck in a **** hole without a real solution
(except joining the military and risking being shot up somewhere overseas for years to obtain funding for college).
