Since 1955, the U.S. has had music services that you could subscribe to and they would give you deeply discounted prices on CDs, DVDs and books. People on ATRL are really naive and very uneducated in the world of business, but they see words like "free" and "8 for 1" and think nobody actually paid for the records so their sales don't count. In reality, the average person would get four or five records a year from the club service and while they'd save about $40 for that bulk purchase, they'd end up paying more for it in a year-long membership that cost almost $200. Sony BMG and Columbia House brought in $1.5B in 2000 alone
They aren't counted by Nielsen Soundscan because they didn't want to pay to join them. Instead, their sales are reflected through RIAA (the people that do certifications). They became practically irrelevant by 2006/2007. Columbia House is controversial because they used reverse-option billing (i.e. they'd send you a CD and unless you returned it, they'd charge you for it). That was only done for their artists (i.e. Mariah Carey, Destiny's Child, etc.). Columbia is the QUEEN of chart-manipulation (they have been caught for payola numerous times).
