For my 1st song, I chose "All the Lovers" by Kylie Minogue, fittingly from her album Aphrodite. I thought about choosing the title track instead but I felt this song better represented the feelings/thoughts I get when looking at The Birth of Venus. "All the Lovers" is about the desire for that perfect lover, something we're all looking for. It is a very calming song, it feels very pure to me, the song is hopeful yet sensual, like the painting itself.
The Birth of Venus fills my mind with images of water & the ocean as well as love & desire, so I thought which song would be better than this double entendre of sexual/nautical positions. "Rock the Boat" is one of the most sensual & sexual songs I could think of but also one of the most relaxing & soothing. The lyrics are all about sex & desire and they make me want to give a man a lap dance tbh, "explore my body, until you reach the shore..you'll be calling calling for more".
I think this is the most obvious song I could have chosen but it is the 1st song that pops in my head whenever I see the painting ever since the ARTPOP era (the impacT). I feel like it would be the same for most of ATRL too, this is a pop music forum after all, so I would have felt dumb if I did not choose "Venus" for this trinity.
"Venus" belongs in this trinity because not only is it basically named after the art, but it gets a shoutout in the lyrics as well.. "Aphrodite lady seashell bikini" & "goddess of love take me to your leader". The whole song is about lesbian sex/desire for sex. Gaga has found a female lover that is so godly at love making, she must be a disciple of Venus herself and she wants to be immersed in her sex and love.

"T H E S O N O F M A N" by R E N ÉM A G R I T T E
dddddddd.
The first song is what the painting is mostly about. René Margritte said about the painting, "Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest in that which is hidden and which the visible does not show us. This interest can take the form of a quite intense feeling, a sort of conflict, one might say, between the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present." This correlates well to Florence's song Hiding, with lyrics such as "I know that you're hiding, I know there's a part of you that I just cannot reach.". Both are obviously about hiding, and being more interested in what is out of sight versus what is in sight.
This second song is about the biggest imagery piece in the painting, the apple. V V Brown sings, "Our love crashed before our lives, Like the ocean paralyze" which represents the location of the man in this painting, and then the apple which is used to hide the man's face to V V represents her lover, but ironically says "Don't hold me captive, Not the apple of my eye" further increasing our want to see the whole man and not what's hidden by the apple.
These lyrics fit perfectly to the mysterious nature of the man and the quality the painting provides to want to keep looking at it, "It’s getting hard to look away, It’s not your real face anyway" The idea of the narcissus, someone who is more in love with themselves than anyone else, works here as it furthers our want to know about the artist in this self portrait due to what we can't see.
Since art is typically interpreted differently from person to person, my interpretation of this painting is that some of history’s greatest scholars from Plato to Aristotle to Ptolemy are gathering together to exchange ideas and improve the world. In some way they did heal the world by making a better tomorrow for all of mankind through their insights and research. Michael Jackson’s lyrics in Heal The World is perfect as an opener to this idea.

With this song I want you to apply it to the atmosphere of this painting. The theme should give you a feeling of a great yet peaceful meeting. It serves as a useful bridging piece for this trinity in term of the art and in term of the two artists I used.
Okay this might come off as a cheesy choice (I almost used We Will Rock You but that’s better as an opener and I already have Heal The World) but the lyrics can most definitely be applied to this painting. Given that this painting was made in the 1500s during the Renaissance era, these figure would most definitely be seen as “Champions” of mankind for their efforts.

The Painting: The Night Watch
Artist: Rembrandt
This painting is renowned for 3 characteristics....a TRINITY of attributes, you could say ():
1. Massive Size
2. Use of Light & Shadow
3. Perception of Motion
While this painting portrays a group of men in the military, there's one person who really stands out of the crowd....
Dis bad bitch right here.
I mean, bitch has a dead chicken tied around her waist!
When will your fave?
That's why this trinity is dedicated to the true star of this painting.
PTAF - Boss Ass Bitch
Massive Size: Dis bad bitch knows she's the boss, so this song fits perfectly for her. This song also speaks for the massive size of the painting, because she might be small in stature, but she gives off the aura of being larger than life itself. She walks around like she's the BIGGEST bitch in this joint! These men know she's the real HBIC.
Nicki Minaj - Lookin' Ass
Light & Shadow: Dis bad bitch ain't in the game for some lookin' ass crackers. She wants a real man who can lay it down CORRECTLY! This song is to highlight the contrast of the male and bad bitch dichotomy in the painting, just as the light and shadow does.
Foxy Brown - B.K. Anthem
Perception of Motion: Dis bad bitch is the leader of this pack. When she moves, they move....just like that. This song is her anthem, it's what she would play as she leads them into battle. It's the song she'd be bumping while they celebrate their victory. She waves around her dead chicken, and BOPS to this song.
Dis is one bad bitch you want on your side of the battlefield! What she lacks in size, she makes up for in her massive bad bitch attitude. She will show you light before she sends your ass into the shadows! Don't f**k with her motion, or she'll kill your ass dead and hang your head around her waist like you're some trophy!
Dis one's for her bad bitches around the world.

Welcome to
Christinas World
She is known to have suffered from polio and the artist was inspired to create the painting when he saw her crawling across a field while he was watching from a window in the house. He pulled us to see her world, the world that she's been through.
Calvin Harris ft. Ellie Goulding - Outside
Literally she is outside her house sprawled in a field. However, essentially, this song represents her struggle living as a disabled woman. She is such a strong woman and it was proven in the painting that she didn't use a wheelchair or any device designed to assist walking.
Björk - All is Full of Love
When I saw Christina’s World, I was fascinated by the detail lines of the painting for grass and the scenery. It's so powerful yet mysterious at the same time. I feel like she is feeling the nature, the softness of the field and the sky. It draws me into her world, into her love for the nature surrounds her.

Preface: Pollock’s No. 5 is one of the most expensive painting ever sold, privately, but let’s be honest, anyone of us, would gladly splatter paint on a canvas and sell it for 140 million $, amirite. The painting is often described as a bird’s nest, which immediately reminded me of the idiom “leaving the bird’s nest”. This trinity is based around the notion of growing up and leaving behind childhood. The focus is, primarily, on specific experiences that are connected to the loss of innocence told through a fantasy short story lens.
Black is the end, but the end always implies a new beginning.
The first wound inflicted onto our childhood-self is listening to that dark voice in our head that tells us to do “bad things”. This wound signifies the start of a different adventure in a different terrain. More than ever children are giving into the voice telling them to “follow me into the jungle”. Running head first through the passage, in this moment, the corruption and undertaking of their innocence has begun. Wonder if anyone told them once they lose their light (innocence) they can’t get it back.
"Well it's too long living in the same old lives "
Once through the passage, the children are met with a luminous tree, bearing a peculiar emerald fruit, in the middle of a dense dark jungle. They are soon pressured, by the darkness, to take a bite. They begin to feel the electricity flowing through themselves and each other. Colors are brighter, sounds are more vibrant and they can sense the energies surrounding them. This feeling is unmatched to any emotion they’ve ever felt. The emotion courses right out of them and into the next person. The darkness, then begins to take a solid form. Half the children can’t comprehend the sights and feelings the shining emerald fruit caused them to experience; which, triggers them to lose control and panic. Paranoia and a fear, so intense, sets in. The emerald drug has caused the light of their innocence to diminish even further; and the childhood-self’s heartbeat slows.
"This is what the world is for / Making electricity"
The transformation can now begin. Cocoons enwraps the children and the metamorphosis commences to take hold of them. After a few moments the cocoons begin to unravel; unrecognizable creatures break through the fibrous material. The bright-feathered creatures call to one another; they start pairing up. Like an intricate dance the creatures start tenderly preening each other’s feathers. Each creature, in the pairing, launches itself into a frenzy. Ravaging its partner and leaving them scattered throughout the jungle. The last act of sex ends the short life of the childhood-self. The children have rushed pass many precious moments to make it here. For what purpose? Sex without love is a meaningless ritual that invokes the inner primal monster that will lead to consume everything around it.
"it’s visions of making love even though we just ****ing / only thing on my mind so I know I’m more than crushing"

My painting: The persistence of memory - Salvador Dali
The real vision
Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding - Outside
This painting for me symbolizes what's real and what's only an illusion. I chose Outside because I think of all the things we as humans have done, that it affected space and time. We made our society decay rapidly and Outside then resembles the people who see the world for what it is. People are showing us how the world actually looks now that they see it for what it really is.
I'll show you what it feels like, now I'm on the outside
The dream
Bjork - Hunter
The painting can be seen from many perspectives, like for an example a dream. You organize your own dreams, you decide what you want to do and when. No one else is relying on you, you're completely free in your dream. That's why I chose Hunter, because the song is about the freedom of the artist. Björk sings in the song that she's bringing back the goods, but she doesn't know when. The whole song is a metaphor for doing music at her own tempo and in her own favored direction, It is her dream state for making music. She wants to be free in releasing music, and not being dependent on people.
I thought I could organize freedom
The decay
Lorde & Disclosure - Magnets
Magnets is a song about a weakening relationship, that the narrator doesn't want to end. But it's too late now. The song links with the painting because the painting is affected by the space around it, and the song it's the love that affects a person. The painting shows a decay that can be affected by anything, but it can't be reversed. That's why we need to embrace the point of no return, because once it is affected that severe, there is nothing we can do about it.
Let's embrace the point of no return
Prismatic
a different perspective of death
The most notable and eye-catching part of this artwork is defnitely the anamorphic skull at the bottom. The skull is a visual puzzle for the audience, in the sense that one can only view it when viewed from the side. Therefore, I chose a song which speaks on looking at death from a different perspective. Death may not necessarily be a bad thing, it all depends on how you look at things.
discord in the living world
As we move up to the lower shelf, we see a terrestrial globe. This represents the world we live in. There is also a lute with a broken string next to a hymnbook, suggesting that there is religious disharmony in the world. The song that I have chosen illustrates religious and cultural intolerance. The singer reflects on the ugly behavior of humans and the desire and greed for utopia.
the promised land
The final significant part of the painting is the top shelf. The celestial globe and astrolabe are symbols for heaven. In other words, this is the part of the painting where everything's wonderful and great. As such, I chose a euphoric and grand song to end off my trinity.

Nighthawks is a 1942 oil painting that is often recognized as one of the pivotal works in American Art. It's a piece that is constantly referenced and discussed - it's iconic (and not just ATRL iconic).
The question of course, is what the context in 1942 was. As many of us may be aware, that period in time in American History was one of deep-rooted segregation. So what would this painting be like, if things were different? What would the atmosphere of this suave downtown diner, late at night be like in a new context? This is Nighthawks re-imagined.
Each of these songs reference the music in these periods, pulling inspiration from genres like funk, jazz, and soul. Many of which were gaining their traction in the '40s and '50s even if they were in early stages. As such, they fulfill that downtown big city motif, a classic and sophisticated soundtrack with a deeper meaning. Each of these songs touch upon different perspectives of people of colour in a modern context, but are grounded in the experiences of those from generations past.
genetic fail
Completed by June 1937, Guernica is probably Picasso's most famous work and most powerful political statement, painted as an immediate reaction to the Nazi's devastating casual bombing practice on the Basque town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War.
Guernica shows the tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicts upon individuals, particularly innocent civilians. This work has gained a monumental status, becoming a perpetual reminder of the tragedies of war, an anti-war symbol, and an embodiment of peace.
The painting depicts a room of pandemonium with countless different things going on. On the far right, a figure with arms raised in terror is entrapped by fire from above and below.
This represents chaos, the cause and ultimate effect of wars. The Black Eyed Peas and Justin Timberlake discusses it in their song Where Is the Love? Originally written about the state of the post-9/11 world, the song tackles the disintegration of society's values. "Whatever happened to the values of humanity? Whatever happened to the fairness and equality?" apl.de.ap raps on the track. This song is a reminder that our actions should be more sensitive to others, that our differences should not make us indifferent, and that we are all one kind that should love one another.
On the left is a woman grieving over a dead child in her arms.
Another horrible thing that war brings is death. Not only does it cause physical death but death to dreams, to comfort, to everything. In war, all things go. In this Pinkprint album cut, Nicki Minaj raps about the loss of her child which is easily the most painful thing a mother can go through. Many innocent souls are killed in wars while others are left orphans. Nicki also talks about her other hardships such as losing his cousin and strained relationships among others. But the most important message of the song by far is how she got back up from these challenges into the person that she is now today. "We wake back up and do it all again," Nicki raps. The only good thing that war brings is resilience. People come out stronger from it: damaged, but strong.
On the center of the painting is a lamp, held by a frightened female figure, who seems to be witnessing the scenes before her.
Amidst all the mayhem, it is important to know that there is still hope. Hope is that elixir that keeps us strong, keeps us fighting day by day. This song was written for The Hunger Games, a very political movie where indigent teenagers are forced by a corrupt government to kill each other for entertainment. Later on in the series, the common people will start a revolution against the administration in hopes of overthrowing it. "You'll be alright. Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound," Taylor Swift soothingly sings on the track, letting us know that the war will soon be over.
Gustav Klimt was an Austrian symbolist painter known most famously for his "golden phase" paintings. Klimt's primary subject was the female body and he was significantly influenced by Japanese art and its methods.
Favorite lyrics: “O quam sancta, quam serena,
Quam benigna, quam amoena
O castitatis lilium”
"Lilium" - Elfen Lied
Anime is one of my interests, and the opening theme of a series I've watched is actually inspired by Klimt's work. "Lilium" is arranged in the style of a Gregorian chant in Ecclesiastical Latin and uses lyrics adopted from Bibical passages.
When I first saw the painting, it struck me as otherworldly. The lovers are captivating and the brilliant gold makes the painting seem almost like stained glass. I think "Lilium" captures that atmosphere perfectly. The song is hauntingly beautiful and so innocent--like the lovers themselves. I find it fitting that a Japanese production used Klimt as inspiration when Klimt himself was inspired by Japanese art. A reverse Klimt expedition.
Favorite lyrics: “For here you are, standing there, loving me
Whether or not you should
So somewhere in my youth or childhood
I must have done something good”
"Something Good" - Julie Andrews & Bill Lee
As I studied the painting and Klimt more, I noticed smaller details. The meadow the lovers are standing on, the way they're embracing, the way it looks like he's almost whispering to her. When I thought of meadows and Austria, Klimt's home country, the opening shot of The Sound of Music popped into my head, and I figured that'd be perfect here.
In "Something Good," Maria and Captain von Trapp are alone, together and finally confessing they're love for one another. They're almost whispering, counting their blessings and enjoying their new love. They're in each other's arms and beautiful to watch.
Favorite lyrics: “Kiss me once,
And you will watch me fall
Kiss me twice,
And I will give you my all”
"Kiss Me Once" - Kylie Minogue
Lastly, I thought of the subjects in the painting. They seem joyous with each other, free, and I decided to represent that. "Kiss Me Once" is a euphoric declaration of love. It conveys the emotions of the lovers in the painting and the highs and happiness of romance. It's simple and sweet--like a kiss.

act I. the birth
"Murder is punished, and you'll be destroyed
by the avenging phantoms of you children. "
Time is... terrifying. Every tick of the second hand strikes on my body like a fist. Every movement of the minute hand crushes my lungs with the force of a sledgehammer. I am no longer the man I used to be: I am in my winter, my dusk. My frame is mangled, my thoughts slow, my looks withered... And the pity. The condescension from those who used to fear me and carry out my law pains me more than my bones ever could. "I can do that for you, sir", "don't worry too much about it sir," "do you need me to clean your soiled pants, walking-cadaver-sir?" "Funny how you'll end life as you started it, isn't it, sir?"
...And the boy. I see myself in that boy. Young. Powerful. Capable. What I would give for just a little more time...
act II. the plot
"Sima Qian records a number of Qin Shi Huang's elaborate and expensive but ultimately futile attempts to discover and access legendary sources of eternal life. For example, “a native of Qi named Xu Fu and others submitted a memorial saying that in the midst of the sea were three spirit mountains named Penglai, Fangzhang and Yingzhou, with immortals living on them. They asked that they be allowed to fast and purify themselves and to go with a group of young boys and girls to search for them. The emperor thereupon ordered Xu Fu to gather a group of several thousand young boys and girls and set out to sea to search for the immortal men.”
As the days pass, I deteriorate, and he grows stronger, more regal, gather supporters... I am alone. He has taken all I gave to him, along with all that I have ever owned. I know he plots to dispose of me. What schemes does he meditate on behind that stately countenance? What malice lies beneath his mock-respectful utterance of the word "father"?
...No longer can I be passive. I will ensure my survival. I will fight death. I will kill time.
act III. the dawn
"As for the child, it was but three days old,
When Laius, its ankles pierced and pinned
Together, gave it to be cast away
By others on the trackless mountain side.
So then Apollo brought it not to pass
The child should be his father's murderer,
Or the dread terror find accomplishment,
And Laius be slain by his own son.
Such was the prophet's horoscope."
Time... Will never scare me again. I command its passage. Time bends to my will. I am no longer the man I used to be: I am a titan, a god. I have achieved permanence.
...As for the boy. I see myself in that boy. Young. Powerful. Capable. I foresee that one day, he will come to challenge me. It is prophesy, it is fate.
...I see my father in myself, as well.

I noticed when looking at this painting that it was divided up into three parts, which each section increasing the level on intensity. As a result, the songs I've selected flow in a chronological order to how I perceive the events depicted in this painting
This garden starts off as a calm and serene place for two people to hang out and be themselves with each other. The fact that they are portrayed nude in this shows they were very comfortable and didn't have to put up a front. The clothed figure in my opinion resembles God, who these two individuals probably felt comfortable being themselves around as well. The icing on the cake is how happy and peaceful the animals are in this picture.
It isn't long though before other people discover this area. The garden becomes heavily crowded very quickly and things get a little hectic. But at the moment, everyone seems to be having a good time, and any issues seem to be lost in the moment and everyone is just letting loose, being themselves and having a blast. Any social environment is going to have some drama in it, but at the moment, it's not causing any permanent issues.
Unfortunately, everyone starts to lose their mind and all hell breaks loose. The people start to destroy the garden, loot nearby buildings and attack each other. What was once a nice, quiet, peaceful place has become an unbearable hellhole. It becomes a sad scene to watch, because the main reasons things don't last forever is because people intervene and screw things up.

rl231's The Milkmaid Trinity
I chose 9 to 5 because this painting SCREAMS to me the essence of working, and 9 to 5 is the quintessential song about working. Also, in the painting, I see a slight darkness in her eyes as to what she is being subjected to do. Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 is the exact same way but with the same dark sadness that I see in the painting.
I guess we go from one old icon to another with Donna Summer’s She Works Hard for the Money. This song epitomizes Vermeer’s Milkmaid painting because you can tell that she a caring and painstaking worker, who deserves great treatment. Her partly downtrodden eyes say that she wants better treatment and yet she seems slightly at peace too.
Continuing with this theme of old music, iconic songs, and all female artists, I wanted to end with the sad yet anthemic I Will Survive. I liken this song to the painting because being a maid can be considered a demeaning job that one would want to get out of; however, this maid will survive and go through it in her life. In I Will Survive, there’s pain and joy in the song, which is the same as the woman in the picture. Her downtrodden eyes and faint smile are a dichotomy, like the song.
