I have no idea what to write, which is incomprehensible considering my area of study. Maybe I know too much about sociology to be comfortable trying to reduce its complexities into a catchy song.

When I sing covers I never change the pronouns, and I hate when people do. When covering a song you're telling someone else's story. If you really need to make it "yours" you might as well rewrite all the lyrics. You don't change pronouns when reading a book aloud, so why do it for a song?
