Mainly because Britney fell harder and cameback and made more money, higher grossing tours and still got her a few more hits.

Mariah did sell 2.5x many albums WW and had the biggest song of the decade but money/touring were not stellar...if Britney didn't have the biggest selling tour of her career and some of the biggest selling songs of her career from the circus era I'd give it to her

Yeah people thought he was over. He was being a spoiled brat (he's been able to cover up some of that but what he's let loose this era hasn't taken away from the fans anticipation of his new music).

They've been promoting like hell too, and considering that he was predicted to debut with 100K less than what he is now, I'd say it was pretty slick considering that 1Dead's predictions have only been going down since Friday.
