They have enough hit songs for people to pay to see them live and that's enough, not everybody has that.
Also they're not over, despite yearly releases they're still pulling 350k opening week  on their 5th album. They're just taking a break... ala beyonce post IASF 6 years into her career

What goes up must come down? Artist have gone from diamond and then within 5 years to struggling to hit platinum.
You bringing up legendary groups like U2, rolling stones etc. makes my point. They made a lot of money for their peak and still make money on tour now.
The idea that a 2010s band can make more money than bands that started in the 60s/70s isn't saying too much...3-4 decades into their careers they are generation 100s of millions and this is past their peak.
One direction will not have that. There was a time where Backstreet boys, nsync and new kids on the block were making so much money on tour during their peak.
How are those boxscores now?
Good on One direction for making their money now but you can't really think that this group that's making a ton of money now equals longevity and certainty that this will continue for 2 or 3 decades.
I'm not shading Backstreet Boys, BSB > Nsync> New kids tbh.
That said, they broke records and did massive numbers AT THEIR PEAK but no one keeps it going foreever and especially teen artists. BSB actually had an adult audience and they still didn't avoid the inevitable for any music career.
Meanwhile OD does not have 3 legit songs that the GP either loves or loathes but remembers.
THey are here to fulfill a need for a market that are starting to move on.
It's the naturally timeline of a teenstar.
At least they are getting a ton of money. Some teen stars don't always get the pay off.
