Soundscan counts exact sales in the U.S. (and about thirty other countries). Their numbers are protected and you have to subscribe to them to see them (it costs a couple thousand so only record label and charting companies have access). It's also illegal to post their sales online without their permission. Some brave soul, however, posted Britney's and now we know she's past 80M record sales through Nielsen Soundscan.
