At the time, her wild lifestyle was edgy but accepted more in the gay community than mainstream
Her great music saved everything. her unique, innovative ways saved her as well.
She was probably the first that could get away with it because her music was on point.
My mother was an avid Janet stan back in the day.
She HATED madonna.
One day we were watching VH1 in the 00s and they played classics and Vogue and borderline came on back to back and I made a point (she called Madonna a **** many times) to say that even though her image is wild you have to admit that her videos are great.
She was like "meh" she agreed.
That's how it was at that time.
They placed image married with music. They never divorced the two except for MJ a little.
This is why EVERYONE felt Bobby brown ruined Whitney because they could never see Whitney as doing drugs even though bobby only smoked weed and drank before Whitney.
It was WHITNEY who did cocaine with Eddie murphy and her brothers before meeting bobby.
They REALLY believed in the image they saw.
