It's the same audience and you're right, different manifestation, but there are key differences and it takes different circumstances and a special artist for the solo version to manifest itself. Bieber is to boybands as Britney was to girl groups.

Further, it's much easier for a solo act of that ilk to reinvent itself. It's why Britney and Xtina moved past the bubblegum era whereas BSB died with it.
