The first three books were great, the last two were a bit messy. But the show did an extremely good job with abiding to the book so it's no big deal if you haven't read it yet, especially considering that the last episode of the last season was quite literally how the series ends. It's funny how the trilogy isn't done yet and the next season will mostly be based out of something new now that they've covered about everything in the books.
