The original concept of Circus was actually going to address darker subjects regarding her life, but her label realized after Blackout underperformed that people didn't want edgy, angry Britney. The public wanted happy, pop radio, smiling Britney, so that concept ended up getting scrapped in exchange for more appealing songs like Womanizer and If U Seek Amy.
She did talk about it in the For the Record interview though, but she made it sound a bit more like a mistake than really going deep into it and addressing the root of its cause.

Xpired REALLY ****ed herself over acting like such a bitch towards everyone, especially during 2002/2003 when she developed that Kanye-esque ego where she made no secret that she loved herself on unparalleled levels and thought everyone and everything else was beneath her.
No one was gonna feel bad for her when times got tough like they did for Britney because she was such a **** for no reason for such a long time.
Why so little dancing though. Stupid bitch, being inspired by Godney is one thing but stop letting directors cut the dance scenes. This is Circus video all over again :@
