I’m glad you came back from last week’s misstep (I know all the other judges liked your entry last week but I wasn’t a huge fan ). The verses are beautifully written. I did find a few awkwardly phrased lines, but they can be looked over. I think your main mistake this week was trying too hard to fit the title into your song. It seemed like you were just throwing in a few half-assed rhymes in the chorus until you could put the title in.

Does it fit the album: Something I noticed about The Weeknd is that he DOES have dark moments, but they're always underlying in double meanings, metaphors, etc. In that sense, I feel it was a bit too evident what you were saying. I did not really get a BBTM vibe from this song.

I thought this was a strong and very realized entry with a good concept. I’m not terribly familiar with The Weeknd’s work so I had to listen to a couple tracks before critiquing this properly but as far as the song itself goes I liked it. “Fastness” seems a little unnatural in the chorus, but I like the rest of the lyrics there. You have some really great lyricism in the verses and that’s where you shine in this song. “But when our nocturnal skin knows daytime’s sin / It burns in disarray” was so good.
Did it fit the challenge?
From what I’ve heard of The Weeknd, his music always has a darker edge to it and that came through in this song. I can see this being sung in the style of a song like The Hills, yeah, I think you did a good job.

It’s a really cool approach and I like the song lyrically. High points to me were your verses, they had some cool imagery and the rhyming was very natural. I was a bit turned off from your chorus, I thought the rhyming there felt a bit too repetitive while I think you could have gone for something more innovative there. I was also a bit unsure of how it fits with the album, not to pigeon-hole The Weeknd but he has a very signature dark style (which really came through in that album, personal thoughts aside), I wasn’t so sure that you really got that in this song.

Beauty Behind The Madness
V1
Day’s dark eyes turn to night’s bright lights
Where they can’t see our mistakes
So we can finally fly these empty skies
Our wings free from their cage
Breathe in, breathe out that freedom cloud
Take a trip to a better day
When we’re in their crowd, it’s not allowed
But here, we’re truly safe
PRE
Cause they see something else when they look our way
Oh, they see a lost soul who isn’t here to stay
CHORUS
Cause they don’t like our fastness
And they all think we’re reckless
The way we get lost in our sadness
It’s the beauty behind the madness
V2
We live, we do what we want to
Don’t tell me it’s not okay
We’re loud, we’re proud, I’ll shout it out
Giving a home to the astray
But when our nocturnal skin knows daytime’s sin
It burns in disarray
With their squinting eyes and whispered lies
They’re the reason we ran away
PRE
Cause they see something else when they look our way
Oh, they see a lost soul who isn’t here to stay
CHORUS
Cause they don’t like our fastness
And they all think we’re reckless
The way we get lost in our sadness
It’s the beauty behind the madness
Oh, they think our life’s disastrous
They think we do this cause we’re helpless
But the way we get lost in our magic
It’s the beauty behind the madness
M8- 1
Black suits and rich skirts
Think high class words aren't heard
By the one without a dollar shirt
To his name
I hope they know
They'd be the ones in tattered clothes
If life’s gifts and money’s glow
Had gone the other way
But life don’t work that way
No, life don’t work that way
No, no, no
Life don’t work that way
CHORUS
Cause they don’t like our fastness
And they all think we’re reckless
But the way we get lost in our sadness
It’s the beauty behind the madness
Oh, they think our life’s disastrous
They think we do this cause we’re helpless
But the way we get lost in our magic
It’s the beauty behind the madness
They think we’re all anxious
They think we’re all thankless
But the way we get lost in our sadness
It’s the beauty behind the madness
