The Hawaiian population of cane toads was established in 1932, from an intentional shipment of 148 Puerto Rican cane toads. They arrived in Oahu, but can now be found on all major Hawaiian Islands. In 1999, cane toads in Hawaii were found to be infested with the parasite Acanthocephalus bufonis. A study from EDP Open found that 97.9% of Hawaiian cane toads had the parasite present in their digestive systems, and showed a negative correlataion between the amount and presence of the parasite and the size of the cane toads themselves.
