True.
That said, people were in awe at her vocals and gave her credit for her songwriting that whitney didn't do.
With emotions, she began getting slammed for hackneyed lyrics and sounding like aretha through a computer speaker or something which meant that it lacked the depth.
I remember that being on one of those great VH1 behind the music type things.

Success and Awards aside, her debut still wasn't close to one of her least critically liked eras.
Publications dubbed her as the new Whitney, she was THE talk, and her performances at the GRAMMYs/SNL/etc were acclaimed.
I can see why people would think she was white in the 90's. But not now... like this white woman just randomly having rappers on all her songs, marrying a black man, having all black friends, and being in Precious, Empire, and The Butler?
A Rachel Dolezal tea.

True.
Honestly, my best friend from college thought she was white and just thought she hung out with black people.
I was shocked. I thought she talked so much about her multiracial upbringing but to the average person.
and HERE'S THE TEA
She was marketed as a white woman that could outsing r&b soul singers while making middle of the road radio hits that anyone could relate to.
So I understand why they'd be confused and if they were no longer into mariah in the 2000s they wouldn't be none the wiser.

The way Christina misstepped so much that Britney dominated pop 00s, Beyonce R&B, Pink A/C pop and Shakira latin pop.
ALl areas Christina could have been competitive in had she not rested on her talent and pushed more.
