This is closer to what the typical anime character looks like. The other characters do look white(2nd and 4th), but they're a rarity.

I'm going to say this one last time. Anime characters are not designed to look asian. The represent an unattainable genetic ideal that not a single race on this planet contains. The only way to resemble an anime character is to undergo heavy plastic surgery. They are indeed inspired by European features. Overall, the way the characters look is irrelevant, since Anime is not rooted in reality, but in fantasy. In this fantasy world, asians have white features and are all over 6 feet tall, everyone speaks Japanese, all women have extremely large breasts and impossibly long legs, and men only have incredibly defined cheekbones or chins that come to a sharp point. Eyes are larger than a hand and people possess magical powers.

I must be the only one who looks at anime/manga characters and just see's anime/manga characters.

The reason they look white to some of you is because to you white is the default and the characters have to be given distinctly different features for you to think otherwise.

No Japanese person looks at the typical anime/manga character and see's a white person because to them Japanese is the default unless given distinctly different features. This is a great example of it

That's true. I bet to most Asian people, Sailor Moon looks plenty Asian but to white people she looks white because she has light hair.

Some anime characters ARE indeed supposed to portray Asians (altho they may not look like one)
Some characters are American, European, hell even aliens

in this particular scenario, Yagami Light is a young Japanese male living in Tokyo so it makes no sense to cast a white male for playing this role
I'm sure Hollywood can find some "clever ))" way to twist up the plot only to bomb though
