super quick reviews
When The Sun Goes Down was just a pop album. The songs were varying in their effectiveness but the heights were quite sharp and well done (LYLALS, Bang Bang Bang). The thing is, it has no real personality and struggles to find it's identity. "Who Says" is a cute song but it feels somewhat lifeless. "Whiplash" might be an attempt at being ~mature but again, it's just not convincing enough for me. "My Dilemma" sounds like nothing, and a lot of other songs are just... there. That's where the 6.0 comes in. While it has it's moments it just doesn't work as a whole piece for me. One of my big pet peeves with some pop artists is a tendency to just throw together a bunch of tracks that don't really have a concept.
Stars Dance aims big but falls flat. Again there are some interesting moments but I feel like it just came at the wrong time. A lot of the songs feel like they could be sung by someone else and there wouldn't really be much of a difference. I gave it a 5.8 because it just doesn't stand out to me. What is there for me to say that I want to go listen to Stars Dance? When there is SO much music out there, I need something to pull me towards it and I felt that it just didn't do that for me. Also, a lot of the songs work for only a few weeks, they lack the staying power that would help them stick in my mind.
I'll listen to Revival one more time before getting into it, but on my first impression that was what I felt it deserved.
