It's just that that performance in particular has always been so unnecessarily praised in my opinion.
Calling it pretentious is just a dumb comment though. It's almost like anything that someone attempts to do or show they care about their work is called that.
She looked good, the choreography was great, the styling/lighting was professional and the added shock factor made it great entertainment. The audience gasping proves that it wasn't seen as 'pretentious' because they thought it was real for a moment.
And what does this have to do with his talent? He doesn't sell sex, relies on gimmicks, production and props. People attend to his shows to literally watch him with a guitar and his talent, nothing else nothing more. No need to put on a circus.
