I just don't really like Ex and Oh. It's not horrible i guess, better than that waste of human technology "locked away", but when Lorde came with Royals it sounded fresh and completely different while that song just sounds like any other alternative #1.
Remember, not all alternative #1 are hits on the hot 100. I'd say most of them aren't going even top 10.

There are usually only 2 Alt crossover smashes per year now: 2014 had "Pompeii" and "Take Me To Church"; 2015 has "Shut Up and Dance" and "Ex's and Oh's" (and maybe "Renegades").

2014 also had Best Day Of My Life, Cool Kids, Habits, & Ain't It Fun, and Let Her Go was an AAA crossover (AAA is fairly similar to Alternative as a format).
None of those are smashes though (Habits is close), so I get what you're saying.
2015 has had Centuries besides the ones you mentioned.

I guess we have a lot of alt-pop songs (b/c all the ones I mentioned are alt-pop; only Habits is arguably just pop) do well on pop but not alternative, then. That's interesting.
