I actually think it would do well today. It has a timeless sound that still is fresh and nowadays when Miley is twerking and wearing fake dreads as an accessory it would probably be expected.

Piracy had an effect because of napster and not that's not a racist term. look it up.
Britney's albums as well as many others would have sold way more had napster not ate up some sales.
She usually had 1/4 of her singles with cd releases. her debut era had 1/2 the singles released with CD singles
TRL was way more impactful because radio would make a song stuck in your head. A visual would make a song stuck in your head and an iconic imagery would make you invest in the brand. Guess who dominated the TRL era.
