He really did have the opportunity to either become the Usher of his generation or the MJ and it wasn't him beating Rihanna that messed it up completely. It was him deciding to release his first flop album later that year and also embracing the more hardcore image that he should have veered away from.
Since then if he isn't trying to take from Usher, MJ and modernize their sound he's just on hooks that are disposable when he was in the lane to make some iconic globally acceptable hits.
Without you, Kiss Kiss and Forever are as cheesy as it gets...
It's a shame because he went from the potential to have true impact as a crossover artist to just being Urban hit maker and one with good for the moment music at that.
That said, it's a shame that no real competition exists where B quality under normal circumstances looks like A quality
at least he's an r&b icon even if he's not a pop icon

Forever and With You were on his SECOND album. His first album is PURE R&B. And are still only a couple songs in comparison to the rest of the music that era

He has always been majority R&B, with a few more mainstream/pop songs thrown in here and there (still is.)
He already is the Usher of this generation though lmao. It's literally R.Kelly 80's/90's ---> Usher 90's/00's ---- > Chris Brown 00's/10's.
Yes. Again, Thank GOD. He embraced his true self otherwise he would have been another cheesy corny ***** a la Jason De****no. Beating Rihanna made the transition from innocent tween to adult a lot easier and he was able to do what the **** he wanted. Talk about sex, cuss, etc. without having to worry about "offending" people or being "politically correct" anymore. A blessing in disguise.
And it's really not lol. He still has far more crossover potential than MOST Urban acts, still tours and sells out shows overseas in various places, still gets hits in other countries, etc. Urban music just isn't as mainstream as pop music and it never will be but who cares.
