A majority of the cast order is in alphabetical order.
The first two credits, and then the ones that are accompanied by "with"/"and" are the main ones that are out of order, and sometimes the last one before the "with"/"and" names is out of order.

The only ones that serve any relevance to prominence seem to be the opening one or two, hence why they're out of order. Zach was meant to be more of a lead for Asylum initially which is why his placement makes sense.

SPEAKING of Zach, he can murder me anytime 
I don't remember but when Lily showed up in Freak Show did they show her in the opening credits for that one episode or just at the end to keep it a "surprise" for people who weren't looking into the show like we do.

"[Lady Gaga is] very creepy and scary, but in a very emotional way, which I like," Murphy added. "I think this season of all of them feels like our most modern season, it's definitely our most sexual season. It all starts with that lead actor, which she is for us, and she doesn't not disappoint -- I'll tell you that much."
