I think Disco went to hell when everyone started to do it and it became more like a parody. I remember watching a doc on TVOne about it. It was an era that was once loved but overstayed its welcome when people started to make a mockery out of it and overshadowed Rock. + the whole gay/AIDS thing in the late '70s into the early '80s.

The rock stans of the mid-to-late 70s were ruthless. The Nirvana stans seem tame in the comparison. Granted, rock music was at an all time high so I can understand, but the bitterness and underlying misogyny/racism/homophobia behind their hatred for disco. Who goes out and buys music just to burn out (aside from the Little Magnifiers, I remember a few from PawsDown burning Artpop)?
