I get the comparison but Ashlee's debut was a huge success in terms of album sales and popularity in general. Of course SNL ruined it all but that album had a huge start for any popstar. Neither of these girls are seeing those sales or that level of popularity.

Edit- Selena can't sing but her music is good. Good For You is one of the best songs of the year. THWWIW was good too.

I think that some of Nickelback's songs are actually pretty good and I feel like most of the reason they're the internet's biggest joke is because they try to act like they're "hardcore rock" when they're clearly a pop band with rock influence and Chad Kroeger's voice sounds like a chainsmoker underwater... I think if the frontman of the band had a nicer voice/tone (someone like Daughtry) people wouldn't make so much fun of them.

But, I mean, they have pretty impressive album sales regardless so clearly the gp was here for them at one point

it's because they so overtly peddle this middle-american trite in their lyrics all the time about 'the world being against us', being from 'a broken home in small-town america', having 'no fixed address and being spiritually lost'. they're like the epitome of the white trash fantasy. eerily similar to lana using bad boyfriend/submissive girlfriend/west coast locations/americana cliches all the time.

in a way i don't mind nickelback though because the lyrics to photograph are pretty hilarious - 'and what the hell is on joey's head'
