Tough question tbh. I've had constant internet access relatively late (2004-ish) and I try to remember how I got the scoops. I guess, Magazines and Music TV was very important. I'd watch certain shows everyday and read my magazine every week and they'd announce stuff.
In order to know if someone was coming to your country you also had to keep ears and eyes open, TV shows would announce future music performers beforehand on air or on teletext.
Overall, it wasn't as easy as it is today but I remember it often was somewhat more thrilling. Like, when I waited for a show I knew Mariah would be on and it started and I waited for her performance/look etc. Today you have instagram posts before it or bad quality cell phone recordings from the taping (that has its own kind of thrill as well, yes) - but sometimes I actually think it's sad how we sometimes spend hours and hours of "preparation" and "research" before a big performance - for sometimes those 5 minutes passing rather flatly because we either already know everything or the show won't keep what wehad in mind.
I remember mariah's performances on german shows in 2003 and they were nothing special but I was uplifted just by seeing her.
