They were trying to create a better breed of human beings. They chose Kit as his subject because he wasn't bogged down by the racist political culture of the era, was forgiving of people like Lana and Jude even after they did him wrong, put others before himself etc.
I think the implication is supposed to be its thanks to the aliens intervention that humanity finally started waking up and progressing forward in the way they treated others.
Mess I can definitely see them taunting Gaga with one of the children and Gaga being a melodramatic mess.
