It's really not a matter of distance. Austria is geographically closer to Hungary but they'd rather go to Germany instead.

And the UK isn't that far away anyway.

They accommodate about 300 refugees in an abandoned warehouse a few kilometers away from me. I have no idea when exactly they're being sent there though.

I want to add that the United Kingdom is more to blame for the rise of ISIS than most other european countries and yet are the one that takes the fewest refugees... I think that the UK's reputation has taken a lot of damage from this whole mess.

I think the most comments really miss the point here. These people want safety while we discuss irrelevant things like who is Europe's best. And they want to get as far away as they can. Germany has the image in the world to be the land of milk and honey. The truth is of course a more realistic one, but these refugees just want to finally find a happier place for themselves now. No matter what it takes.

The people in here just make it all about themselves. Who cares about those who are currently gping through the lowest of the low a human can go through?
Would anybody of us want to be treated as the refugees from Syria? I doubt it.
