Empowerement songs can come off as cheesy or corny especially if they don't seem geniune but that isn't the only message that can be spread through pop music.I haven't heard of the term "conscious pop" yet but I assume it includes music with a message beyond dancing and partying or classic love songs? And I agree. I don't think music has to have a deep message to be enjoyable. But I also don't think artists who do have a message are pretentious for saying so, especially since they are highly underrepresented in today's music in a commercial way.

Ronald Reagan became President and all he did was be a washed-up actor. Republicans also praised him as being one of the greatest Presidents in history despite him being singlehandedly responsible for millions of AIDs victims and racistly enforcing the Just Say No deal regarding drugs.
