I guess the problem isn't with messages but with cliches, a lot of empowerment songs aren't genuine and basically a waste of time. the term 'conscious pop' is also really pretentious, but I have no problem with either artist since I love their work I just can't stand people saying pop music has to have a message when a lot of people use it for escapism anyway
