Erotica is art, I feel like it's her purest artistic statement, none of the songs sound like she's chasing a hit, but just organically letting the music tell a story. It would have sold less than all her others even without the Sex book, because the GP prefers simple catchy bops. It's why Ray of Light sold as much, "Frozen" is gorgeous but it's a very simple pop song at the end of the day.
