Is that GPA your UC GPA? Bc UC's have their own way of counting GPA's. It's usually higher than your high school's way of calculating GPA.
They only check 10th-11th grade grades but they monitor your senior year grades. They look at your course load and if there's a sudden drop in grades.
And yes, personal statements are important!!
It's getting more and more competitive to get admitted into the UC's, especially the top tier ones. UCLA's overall acceptance rate, for example has dipped to 17% for 2015, while Cal dipped to 16%. For in-state students, the acceptance rate to ucla was 16% and for Cal, 19%.
