No. I meant to copy a gif to post but I forgot to click copy. So I pasted something else.
Much more against the rules.
The fear is too real, my heart nearly stopped.

What's in a name? For me, it's so much more than just the three letters that I am recognised by around
ATRL. At face value, my username is nothing more than just my name; Sam. While I'm a strong believer
that there's power in simplicity, there's also a hidden complexity to my username. I initially wanted to make
Sam my third username change (after SamJJE101 and $oldier), however due to it already being taken, I
settled for Sam Jay. Last year I noticed a sort of trend where members were adding a period after their
usernames to make them more distinctive, but it also doubled as a tool to adapt a similar username to one
that had already been taken. I didn't want to be a follower of this trend, but I liked the idea behind it. If I
wanted to make my username Sam, I knew I needed a workaround, which is why I added a blank space
to my username (you can see it by hovering over my username with my posts). I prefer to be known by a
mononym, much like my favourite artist Kesha. Often the simplest names are the most memorable.
A v a t a r

My current avatar is definitely one of my favourite avatars that I've ever worn on ATRL. Much like my
username, there's a striking simplicity and a hidden complexity. At face value, it says I'm a fan of the pop
singer Kesha. Sure, that's very true. It also happens to be one of Kesha's best looks as of late. But given
Kesha's current situation, it says a lot about me as a person, and more importantly to this challenge, me
as an ATRL member. Despite a lack of chart success, despite a lack of any foreseeable album release,
despite the possibility that she may never release music again, I'm standing by her. It demonstrates my
loyalty, it demonstrates my belief in her word, and it demonstrates my unconditional support for someone
I admire. These are all qualities I believe a Top Member should have; not necessarily in relation to a pop
artist, but their peers. A Top Member is solely determined by the perception of the others around them.
Nobody likes a bandwagoner just as nobody likes a backstabber. Back-back-back-stabber.
Together, my username and avatar say, "This is me, I'm bold and I'm real." There's no confusion and
there's no contradiction. Just clarity. I'm Sam; that Kesha stan who still defends his fave in Stand Your
Ground despite her last single release being a two year old feature on a Pitbull song. But I'm fine with that. |

I. THE USERNAME
I.
It's 2011. My Last.fm library is growing and I am discovering more artists with each day that passes. My music taste is getting wider and wider, more diverse over time. Then, my eyes fall upon a name: Zola Jesus. I'm intrigued, and press play. On first listen, it's not for me; it's too dark, it's too gothic. Her voice is too vast. But as the months go on, I find myself gradually going back to her, again and again, until I have her entire discography downloaded and I have resigned myself to being a Zola Jesus stan. Conatus, an album that helped open me up to different styles of music and different kinds of artist; symbolic in my musical discoveries, symbolic in helping me build an awareness and an appreciation for more obscure and underappreciated things.
II.
"Conatus" is a Latin word. It's a philosophy term that describes the inherent force within a being to survive and develop itself, and that is exactly what I'm doing with each passing day, as I am constantly developing myself and continuing despite what life may throw at me. It may be a cliché, but when all is said and done, I only really have myself, and I only have my own strength and ability to continue to rely on. Its Latin roots also please the linguist within; I speak two languages other than English relatively fluently, as well as two others at a basic level (one at basic conversational level, one at a very basic reading level). At university in September, I will begin to learn two more.
III.
My real name is Connor. Both Connor and Conatus (obviously) begin with "Con", and so it feels as though part of my identity is still present in the username when I sign in and post on the forum. It may only be a username, but it has helped me craft a true representation of who I am on the forum, just like my name and who I am has helped me craft a true representation of who I am in the real world.
II. THE AVATAR

I first started keeping note of my avatars around June 2014. I am currently on the 49th. The constant changing of avatar could symbolise how I have more than one dimension and I am always willing to show them; it could symbolise the many facets of my broad tastes and interests; or it could just show that I want to help repesent my underrated faves and show a little support. These avis are not necessarily always of the same people or things; they have been of musicians, of films, of fashion models. They help to portray the many things that conatus is about.
The current avatar I wear on the site is of Patrick Wolf, an artist I stan for and one of my main faves. The avatar I consider myself to be most-associated with on ATRL is another Patrick Wolf avatar, however, my desire for change stemmed from how I feel Next Top Member marks a new chapter and a new part of my life and history on the forum. I'm the same, but different. You know who I am, but you haven't seen everything yet.

— USERNAMEIt's past midnight, around 1 am EST on New Years Day and I'm running out of time. Somehow I knew that 2014 would be the last time ATRL had open registrations and I had to get in while I could. The only problem was I had no idea what my username should be. Obviously, I wouldn't use my real name.. but then what name do I use? I was listening to Kat Dahlia's "Do Better" (0:25) and during the spoken intro a phrase stuck out to me. Jezang looz blood. "Hm.. Jezang Looz Blood?" The woman's voice sounded smooth and cold, capturing the exact persona that I wanted to represent me here.
Spoken Intro
(Spoken Intro)
Smofo buttalay indidubom jaganip tightlay...
I'm sorry I don't understand...
Cuttee says he can't hang.
Oh stewardess, I speak jive.
Oh good.
He said, "That he's in great pain and he wants to know if you can help
Him."
Alright, would you tell him to just relax and I'll be back as soon as I can
With some medicine.
Jezang looz blood.
I chose the name Jezang Looz (which means "just relax") because I wanted something that was as unique as me. I'm an over-thinker and I wanted my name to represent that. My friends have to constantly remind me to just relax or chill since I'm hyperactive, so I was lucky to have stumbled upon this name. I also made sure to choose something that resembled a first and last name since to me that symbolizes completeness (or my self-diagnosed OCD).
Although one-word usernames are common here, I don't plan to remove "Looz" from my username ever. It also meshes well with my Bonnie Mckee avatar which I'll further explain below. My username stands out among other ATRLers since it isn't a variation of a mainstream artists' name/song title. The name is unusual, even a little mysterious since not many people speak Jive and I like to come off as aloof yet intriguing. It reminds me of Scooby Doo adventures really, which would have also been a cool username.
— AVATARLike most members here, my avatar is of an artist whom I hold dear to my heart: Bonnie Mckee!!!!11114ever. However, I think what makes my avatar interesting is I chose a live moment to gif and not just a music video or a still photo. The scene is from Bonnie previewing her unreleased track "S.L.A.Y." with JoJo Wright. I chose this scene because it shows a real life moment of people working and having fun - which is what I do daily. Bonnie is bopping her head hardcore and JoJo is recording the moment. When people see this avatar I want them to think of the user behind the account as an easy-going person since that's who I am. Bonnie and I also have the same head-bop and I'm sure other people can relate to it - otherwise they aren't listening to music the right way. This avi also fits in well with my rad Jive username. |

The funny thing about me is that I'm pretty indecisive. I don't think that's a bad thing, it just shows that when I want to present myself, I want to present myself in such a way that I can show all aspects of my personality. For that reason, I've chosen a rotating avatar (something I've used quite often) of my personal two favourite avatars of my two favourite artists that I made for myself.
With the Beyoncé avatar, I made it because BEYONCÉ is one of my favourite albums of all time, and the complete visual album aspect was something that I absolutely loved. "Rocket" is one of the best videos from that entire anthology, and it connected with me right away. I admire the grayscale effect because, well, my favourite colours are: black, grey, and dark grey, but I also love how both the song and video are appropriately sensual and mysterious, yet always classy and refined. I hope to be able to present myself and my opinions in this forum in such a way.
The Taylor avatar is my most recognizable avatar, from my favourite album of all time - and my favourite music video - Red. I like that this shows the more approachable and friendly side of me. I'm a kind person who wants to be seen as such, and I think the light-hearted, almost celebratory attitude of this avatar demonstrates that in myself. As much as I like to be refined and classy, I'm also here to have fun and I think this avatar shows that really well too, hence the rotation of my two presentations of self.
username
So there it is. My username has a pretty uneventful history, being the song that I was listening to when I registered (everyone had Adele fever in 2011). But with time, I'd like to reclaim that username and re-interpret it to represent the person I've become (i.e the real me). It shows my love for music and the fact that I literally like "everything" or am at least willing to give it a try. Its become a good indication of who I am as a person and a poster, and its become fairly memorable as a name. With time, I've actually grown to love it, especially now that I've been able to give it new meaning.

My username and my avatar showcase different sides of me and being a prominent part of two different stanbases, they allow me to equally show my love, and support my two favorite artists.
I decided to pick a song as a username because the music section of ATRL is what brought me here (I now know that ATRL is more than a music forum.) I wanted a song that would represent me as best as possible. I ended up choosing Superpower because it effortlessly ticks many boxes. With my username, everyone immediately knows that I'm a proud member of the Beyhive and this empowering song brilliantly highlights many of my aspirations such as:
strength
"Yes we can
Couldn't break us down
They couldn't break us down"
fearlessness
"And just like you I can't be scared"
perseverance
"nothing I know could slow us down
They couldn't slow us down"
togetherness
"I thought I could live without you
But together we've got plenty power"
These are excellent representations of what I am and what I want to be.
Finally, I love how this song has multiple layers and mixes Doo Wop, Traditional R&B and Alternative R&B. I believe it represents the many layers of my personality.
My avatar displays the sides of my personality my username isn't showing. It features Coldplay's frontman, the blue eyed, Chris Martin who I think is very handsome (free eye candy). My avatar also balances out the seriousness of my username because Chris is a goofball, he's funny and he's sometimes messy.
I also love how my avatar is being used throughout ATRL by other members and I hope that it continues to be one of ATRL's reaction pictures.

So like it's weirdly formatted like this to fit within the quotes. Just an FYI if you send it to the other judges. As a child, I spent considerable time alone. My parents worked multiple jobs just to give us the bare minimum. And my brothers also worked and participated in their school’s soccer team, so their time at home was scarce. Above all this, I never felt any feelings of loneliness or sadness. The fantasy worlds, Disney films let me experience, were enough to keep my spirits high. I immersed myself within the magical realm of Disney, by watching the films over and over again. My dad never missed a release date. Every time a new one would come out he would snatch up a copy and rush home; I would just sit in my parent’s room just mesmerized by the stories, characters and amazing songs. My avatar represents the joy those tapes brought me. It’s an ode to my childhood. The avi itself is not sentimental, but rather what it represents is important to me. Those moments I cherished as a kid. Those moments of true joy, that people search their entire lives to feel again. Every time I see that adorable mouse I am reminded of that feeling. Happiness might be fleeting, but its memory is cemented within me.

Honestly, the origin of A Bomb is kinda lame. So, junior year of high school, I had a friend named Karen. She had this FINE ass off-and-on again boyfriend… wooooo but let stop, before this starts sounding like something off of BET Videos After Dark. Anyway, she had a group of female friends and they called themselves The Bomb Squad. I never asked where the name originated from, but basically they would take the first letter of their names and add “bomb” to it. For most of the year, we hung out regularly. We would take the bus together, ditch class to go to both lunches and just talk ****. The point of this being, because we spent so much time together, I just inserted myself into the Bomb Squad. And A Bomb was conceived through immaculate conception. I'm very intense when I speak about things I'm passionate about. I guess that intensity, is what makes me explosive. :] The connection both my username and my avi have is that they both represent the two sides of the same coin. My username represents the hard outer shell. While the username symbolizes the explosive and sometimes careless nature that I have. It’s the tough and sharp shell that surrounds, the kindness and virtues I possess. They are the two extremes temperaments I have. *insert cliché yin yang closing statement here*

Buddy!
Buddy! came from my old username which we will not talk about. It derived off an email that I used to use back in like 8th grade. However, I hated it and and everyone knew me as Buddy to begin with. So I decided to change it to Buddy!. This username I find fitting to my overall personality. The explanation point kinda fits with me as a person, especially on here. It's random, it's eccentric and it's just..peppy. That's my persona on here in a nutshell. I like to think of myself as nice and buddy like(: which is kinda why I wanted to keep it as buddy in the first place. To kinda play up that cute persona that I have about me. Unlike most users, my username has nothing to do with stanning. My name didn't come from any form of music, which is why it's unique? in a sense. Especially since a good majority of atrlers derive their username from their faves.
THE AVATAR
Ralph has never looked so good.
When I first chose my avatar we were all living in an ATRL world dominated with gif avatars (still are smh) I was really one of the only people to have a .png/.jpg avatar. And for that reason I stuck out of the crowd. Not only that, but who else has a simpsons avatar? And of Ralph? Before people really got to know me, I was known as that guy with "the simpsons avatar/character." I stuck out like a sore thumb and people noticed. It really is my claim to fame, especially how i've been nominated twice (in a row!) for avatar of the year at the member awards, and helped me chart on the most influential list. It became a widely used reaction pic across the entire forum. Not only that, but I believe people see Ralph, or an episode of the simpsons, people immediately think of me. People even think I look like damn Ralph.
Ralph is depicted as this really not so smart person, cute, funny, and somewhat bubbly. Which is kinda like what Buddy! is. That's really who I am on ATRL. I always strive to be different, someone who goes against the grain. Which is why I think my whole "presentation" caught on. The presentation that I have for myself. I mean a 2014 member, someone who nobody knew coming out of nowhere with this different look. #rebelheart x
