The lyric video for Nicki Minaj‘s “Only,” which dropped last Friday (Nov. 7), features Minaj as a totalitarian leader who has her tanks lined up for battle. Though animated, the black, white and red video looks uncannily like one of Adolf Hitler’s propaganda films made to demonize those who did not fall in line with the Nazi party.
In the clip, Minaj leads an army of soldiers wearing red arm bands, like the ones Nazi soldiers and other Nazi sympathizers wore. Red banners with the initials of Minaj’s record label, Young Money—written in such a way that looks alarmingly similar to a swastika—hang off a facade that bares a striking resemblance to the Berlin Sports Palace where in 1943, Joseph Goebbels—Hitler’s close advisor and the Third Reich’s Minister of Propaganda—gave his Total War speech, which refers to the “cleansing” or the extermination of the Jewish race.
The Anti-Defamation League—a group founded in 1913 to combat the disparagement of the Jewish community—wrote in a statement yesterday (Nov. 10) that it was “deeply disturbed by the unadulterated Nazi imagery.”
“It is troubling that no one among Minaj’s group of producers, publicists and managers raised a red flag about the use of such imagery before ushering the video into public release,” Foxman continued. “This video is insensitive to Holocaust survivors and a trivialization of the history of that era. The abuse of Nazi imagery is deeply disturbing and offensive to Jews and all those who can recall the sacrifices Americans and many others had to make as a result of Hitler’s Nazi juggernaut.”
Minaj does say “sorry,” but that’s after she admits she really didn’t have anything to do with the video. A bit concerning, being that she released the clip under her name and would ultimately be the one held responsible for its message. And maybe this is more upsetting for those who know that Minaj has always painted herself as a boss, someone who is in full control of her image and career.
To make matters worse, she also pulls the “well, my friend is Jewish” card, as if that makes it all okay; as if that alone should make us all reconsider the video’s overt offensive nature.
