As you said, NPs can prescribe medication, diagnose patients, treat patients, etc. Their role is similar to what a Physician can do.
On the other hand, RNs are responsible of providing the care to patients. For example, when I work at the ER I can be assigned to the Trauma Room and I'll have to take blood samples, install IV catheters, give IV medication, take vital signs, communicate with the physician, take notes, etc.
We have to stay calm amidst chaos, like during reanimation protocols. It's a very complex job because you must always think and act very fast while there is a wide variety of complex health conditions.
