Europeans, how come urban music for the most part is irrelevant there nowadays? It was huge just as recent as 10 years ago, and then it just fell off the map over there entirely.
Please don't say "because it's trash" when many of your countries let every and any recycled, god-awful, middle-of-the-road EDM song to become huge instantly there.
Two reasons. One is that the American music that is given a chance at all internationally is the music that does well on top 40 radio. Urban music hasn't crossed over to top 40 much lately, so the international markets don't get it either.
The other reason is that all European countries have their own urban scene, usually with hip hop artists who perform in that country's language. So there's no need for the trash that the US urban scene is producing.
France for example has Maître Gims who is huuuuge there
Radios in Europe sabotaged Urban music, just like Radios in US did this decade. Radio in Europe would never touch Lil Wayne, Fetty Wap, or Young Jeezy in today. Maybe UK would touch some of their songs, but that's it.
But like in US, with Streaming being added to charts, Urban is making some re-entries finally. A lot of countries in Europe are having the viral Urban hits enter their charts.

Nobody is saying she isn't bigger, but it wasn't by a huge margin.
In Europe? She was way much bigger Mimi, the only female bigger than her during the 80s and early 90s was Madonna. But she released way less than Mimi (who was releasing albums almost annually aRihtea).
Overall in terms of album sales worldwide Mariah did sell more but Whitney was really big in Europe especially during her peak.

Gwarl, the average non-fan can prob name 5 Mariah songs at the top of their head tops (old folks, teens, and masc straights included obv). WYB is probably sitting somewhere in the #15-#10 range.
