But nowadays if you want to watch something you look it up on YouTube rather than watching music channels and waiting for the video you want to watch to come on. I would definitely say more people use YouTube now than the number of people that watched music channels back when they were big

Do you not realise that the popularity of those channels was way bigger than Youtubes? Several million people watched them every day. Basically a video shown at least once a day would get 3 million views easy. In that sense the videos that dominated the Trl era, if they were to have an accurate system of counting the views most of them would be over a billion since songs and videos like All The Things She Said were show several times AN HOUr with each showing giving them a minimum of 2 million views.

Exactly, these days you only watch the videos of songs you like, limiting the exposure. Back then you had no choice what to watch, so music videos were more pervasive. Even if you didn't like the song, if it was popular enough you were likely to see the video at some point.
