It doesn't have to be a pop song. Most of the big hits of recent years aren't pure pop anyway. Just make sure it's a song that can be relatable, easily accessible and made for heavy airplay. So, for example a song about incest or about dying or about sucking off young boys with references to date rape would not cute it
