You can have an acclaimed dance album (Confessions on a Dancefloor has an 80 on Metacritic) or a panned "stripped down" album (American Life has a 60, One of the Boys has a 48). It really doesn't make a difference
Either way, both genres are more acclaimed than pop music and its not like Katy has ever aimed for "artistic merit" anyway. She's a popstar, and since her Metacritic scores have been improving with each album (48 --> 52 --> 61) there's no reason why she can't snatch at least a respectable score like a 70, regardless of what genre she does. 1989 has a 76 and that's a Max Martin-produced pop album just like PRISM was. More than anything, she needs to focus on improving her songwriting and making her albums cohesive

Exactly. OOTB has good songwriting, TD has good pop songwriting, and Prism is just
That being said, all of her albums deserve way higher reviews. If gaga can get good album reviews, Katy should be able to too (no offense to gaga, but come on, look at most of the songs on her albums). OOTB and TD both deserve low 70s

Love this album! Birthday is kinda a lowlight but this would be at least 5 more Metacritic points. Can't get over how much better the album would be if This Is How We Kill An Era, Local Frown, Loathe Me & This Filler were replaced with the deluxe tracks & one of them removed.

Greetings, loved ones
Let’s take a journey
Verse 1
I know a place
Where the grass is really greener
Warm, wet and wild
There must be something in the water
Sippin’ gin and juice
Laying underneath the palm trees (undone)
The boys break their necks
Trying to creep a little sneak peek (at us)
Pre-Chorus
You could travel the world
But nothing comes close to the golden coast
Once you party with us
You’ll be falling in love o o o o
Chorus
California gurls
We’re unforgettable
Daisy Dukes, bikinis on top
Sun-kissed skin so hot
We’ll melt your popsicle
Oh oh oh oh
California gurls
We’re undeniable
Fine fresh fierce
We got it on lock
West Coast represent, now put your hands up
Oh oh oh oh
Verse 2
Sex on the beach
We don’t mind sand in our stilettos
We freak in my Jeep
Snoop Doggy Dogg on the stereo oh oh
Pre-Chorus
You could travel the world
But nothing comes close to the golden coast
Once you party with us
You’ll be falling in love o o o o
Chorus
California gurls
We’re unforgettable
Daisy Dukes, bikinis on top
Sun-kissed skin so hot
We’ll melt your popsicle
Oh oh oh oh
California gurls
We’re undeniable
Fine fresh fierce
We got it on lock
West Coast represent, now put your hands up
Oh oh oh oh
Snoop
Toned tan fit and ready
Turn it up cuz it’s getting heavy
Wild Wild West Coast
These are the girls I love the most
I mean the ones, I mean like she’s the one
Kiss her, touch her, squeeze her buns
The girl’s a freak, she drive a Jeep and live on the beach
I’m okay, I won’t play
I love the bait just like I love LA
Venice Beach and Palm Springs
Summertime is everything
Homeboys bangin’ out
All that ass hangin’ out
Bikinis, zucchinis, martinis, no weenies, just a king and a queenie
Katy my lady (yeah)
Lookie here, baby
I’m all up on ya
Cuz you’re representin’ California
California gurls
We’re unforgettable
Daisy Dukes, bikinis on top
Sun-kissed skin so hot
We’ll melt your popsicle
Oh oh oh oh
California gurls
We’re undeniable
Fine fresh fierce
We got it on lock
West Coast represent, now put your hands up
Oh oh oh oh
California
California
Snoop
California gurls, man
California
California
Snoop
I really wish you all could be California gurls

OOTB, as a whole, has really great, unique, interesting lyrics, and TD, as a whole, has good pop lyrics. Prism, as a whole, has more stupid lyrics than good. Roar, Birthday, TIHWD, IS (what a cheese fest), LM, TM, DR...all just flat out terrible lyrics. Cheesy, cringe-worthy, embarrassing, cliched, and the songs say literally nothing and go no where in developing any kind of story about them. The album is just so childish.

Thinking Of You is gold in terms of songwriting. She's such a talented songwriter & needs to write more songs alone or with one other. More often than not, it's clear that "too many cooks spoil the broth" is true with her. Critics agree:
Philip Matusavage from musicOMH considered that "the fact that ["By the Grace of God"] is the album highlight and is the only song written by less than three people" is an indicator of what Perry should do next.
