I don't think there's like any trick to remembering the difference. As far as I can tell, you have to actively remember which of the two words to use for each the fifty different contexts "for" can be used in in English.

That's what I mean. Even after all this time, I still forget for some words.
Wait at me realizing I was wrong about that whole gerund thing immediately after I had my coffee. I'm dumb. "Wasting my time is my favorite thing to do" would make complete sense.
