Not quite. Something doesn't have to be done with the intent to offend to actually be offense. Just because it wasn't done as a show or costume doesn't change what it was. She colored her skin to give the image of black people. It was blackface.
I love ya, Gis. But, especially when we consider the nasty history and real uses of blackface in our country, we we'll have to agree on the fact that we disagree about this topic.
And, again, to be clear, I'm not excusing this lady for what she's done. I just think that people/the media are being way too harsh and critical when there are worse/greater issues that need to be addressed at the moment.
She did blackface by trying to make herself look black. That is racist. I don't feel sorry for her at all.
It's not racist

By your own logic, boys dressing as females are sexist because they are trying to make themselves look like one
Transgender is not the same ****ing thing as pretending to be a another damn race. The ABSOLUTE IGNORANCE AND TRANSPHOBIA IN THIS POST SMH.
There is not a little bit of transphobia in my post. And no, it's not any different. If they want to be females they can be one and NO ONE should race a flag, because it's their choice. Same case here, let the woman be what the **** she wants to be, why does it even bother you so much?
And lol at the attempt to label me as "transphobic!!111!!11" even when im not to discredit what i said and completely missing the point
Ehh. Maybe i'm really ignorant about this but she's clearly educated about the black struggle, she forwent her white identity (and privilege, somewhat) and is 100% invested in the advancement of "her" people.
It sounds silly and all of her lying is a mess, but I don't think this is anywhere near as bad as people are making it out to be. I find the trans-racial debate interesting, especially because people are shooting it down with brash "but that's transphobic and ignorant" and not actually talking about it. I think we could learn something by talking about these odd grey areas.
I don't see the issue. Michael Jackson did it and no one cared.
Michael always said he was black.
And in the case of Rachel, I don't really know, but it is interesting since she is basically doing exactly the opposite of what history in this country deems acceptable racially. . I want think she did it because she had some sort of void within herself and wanted to be like people she found she related to. She possibly thought going to such extremes would fulfill her, but what she did was the totally wrong way to do it. I think she is a good person and had good intentions ultimately, but deceiving everyone she knows, lying, making up hate crimes targeted towards her.
No, but this woman is White and ppl think she's Black cuz she rockin' a Glozell weave? like I'm just baffled ppl believed it in the first place + it took them this long to find out
Granted yes she looks white, but a lot of light skinned black people "look white" to me, and it's not exactly acceptable to tell someone they aren't black just because you think they look white...
At the end of the day she has done more than say people like Raven who sits on her ass all day making stupid claims. Or people like Common who said blacks need to extend an arm out in love as they get their ass beat by police.
How she went about it was totally wrong but she seems to get it more so than actual blacks.
Being trans is not the same ****ing thing as pretending to be black. GOD you kids here are ignorant and uneducated.
No we're not. We're accepting of people's choices, unlike people like you who is actually ignorant and is desperately trying to make her stay inside of a box she clearly doesnt want to be in!

edit - people STAY misusing Blackface
I agree with you. She's stupid af for lying but she's not bad at all if she understands the struggle and is willing to embrace it to help further the cause

but this whole transracial debate is not a thing
I just think the transracial thing is interesting because we maintain that race is a social construct like gender, but I haven't seen anyone discuss why they're not similar in the least. Gender and race are obviously very different but the "trans" component is an intersection, even if it's possibly just BS.
IDK i just hate when someone's go-to is screaming ignorance and not explicating. It's so privileged and comes from an elitist mindset of sequestering knowledge. But i do have the means to research this myself, so ill have to do some google searches l8r
I want to be mad at her, but I don't. Like, we totally look down on black people who try to become white, so what's the difference? Minorities shame our own for their self-hatred, so why should she get a pass? IDK. It's weird but makes for a very interesting debate.
I guess as a local NAACP leader she must have been just chewing gum, talking on the phone, and collecting a paycheck, right?
She has advocated for the rights of black people and minorities within her community. She has lectured and educated on topics related to African and African-American history. And I bet that both the NAACP and the media will eventually reveal more of what she has done for her local community.
That doesn't take away from the work that's being/been done by many others (Black, Latino, white, etc.). And it does not take away from the fact that she posed as someone with a racial heritage that is not hers. She may need to explain her choices and actions, but she should not be made into some laughing stock for the amusement of people who do nothing more than troll on the Internet and pray to their particular deities for the release of R8 or rubbish of that sort.
