She was just a phenomenal singer who made it off the fact that people think ballads = real music.

And lets not do too much considering Beyonce's albums prior to Self Titled were just as filleric as any other popstar.

And tbh I think people may have cared about vocal performance a lot more back then. If you notice, today's most successful artists are considerably less gifted in the vocal department than those of yesteryear. R&B used to be all about vocals and now... ...it's not lol.
