5D's faced lots of problems at the time!
Even Crow's character was changed.
Do you know why Blackwings are so OP? Cuz Crow was meant to be the villain of the Dark Signers arc, yes, he was the true mastermind behind all of it, why do you think the most powerful Earthbound God was a Condor? Crow was meant to be over Rex, being the leader of the cult, and the one that sacrificed Demak (yes, we never knew how Demak died and why he became a Dark Signer, the answer was that he was a human sacrifice for the devil! and revived as a Dark Signer!).
Also, Rua was meant to duel Dark Signer Bommer, and Ruka was meant to duel Demak alone, but in the end Rua and Ruka ended up against Demak and Crow against Bommer.
Actually in the 2nd ending, you can see a shot of Rua and Ruka vs Bommer, and in the anime, they never even met each other.

Lots of things happened, and everything was that cult's fault.

The director and head-writer of 5D's revealed all of this on twitter, interviews, etc.
More tea is that Rua was gonna get Life Stream Dragon in his duel against bommer, and since it was "Life" it was going to have the power to revive Bommer's slibings (cuz the whale never ate them... if you've watch the episode of Bommer vs Yusei, you'll notice that Rex killed the people in Bommer's town with an explosion, there was never an Earthbound God that ate them).
That's why Life Stream Dragon was revealed since around episode 30.
But when the cult **** happened, and Blackwings started selling like crazy, producers meddling ordered to make Crow a main character and stop the cult thing cuz it was a touchy subject.
So Crow ended up with Rua's signer mark, and Rua didn't get his signer mark nor Life Stream Dragon until like 100 episodes later...

Also there was a reason on why Demak had Ancient Fairy Dragon... but we still don't know why cuz the director never revealed it.

They hired the infamous Yoshida to write post- Dark Signers.
Yoshida is known for hating women. He actually said 2 months ago in an interview that Zexal didn't have important Female characters cuz he doesn't like them, and if it was for him Zexal wouldn't have ANY female character at all... Rio, Shark's sister (for those who watched Zexal) was written as a man, but producers told him not to make him a man, cuz they needed at least 1 female character... Kotori doesn't count cuz she didn't duel.

So saying this, that's the reason Aki Izayoi got cut to a cheerleader, cuz Yoshida DIDN'T want her in the cast. He basically created a power trio of Jack, Yusei and Crow, leaving Aki behind and forgotten.

Why do we hate Zexal? guess what.. Yoshida is the MAIN CREATOR of Zexal... no wonder it sucked.

Now, who is directing Arc-V?
Arc-V's director is the original director of 5D's... yes, that's the reason Arc-v is so epic so far! also, head-writers have worked for shojo (aka Anime about girls like Sailor Moon, Sakura card captor, etc).. that's the reason Arc-V has given females a lot and even more focus than most males.
That's the reason we got two protagonists this time around, Yuya and Yuzu.

Yes, Yoshida decided to push aside ALL female characters. Carly was demoted, and even worse for her, her VA ended up being part of the cult and went to jail... they changed her voice actress after something like episode 100. That's why she sounds so weird.

When (again, like in Rio's case) the producers told him to create a female duelist, he created Cherry... who acts like a man XD. There was a joke of how Yoshida creates the most masculine female characters.

The decided that Rua wasn't going to be a singer cuz the name of the anime was 5D's (aka 5 Dragons), and with Crow, they already were 5. In the end they had to make Life Stream Dragon appear, because if not, it would've left a plot hole.

Yoshida is far away from Arc-v right now. Everyone in the fandom is praying to god week after week that Yoshida never puts a single foot in anything Arc-V related, cuz we know that if that happens it will be the end for Yuzu and Arc-V in general. Cuz Arc-V without its female characters it's nothing.

This is a recount we made of the female influence:
1.- Protagonist = Yuzu. First time a female is considered a protagonist along with the main one.
2.- Mother = Yoko. First time the mother is around and actually helps in the series (and even duels!)
3.- Rival = Masumi. First time there's a female rival.
4.- The fangirl = Mieru. First time the fangirl actually knows how to duel and even helps in the plot with her powers.
5.- Industry = Himika. First time a woman is the director of the important "building" of the series (Kaiba corporation, Duel Academy, etc.).
6.- Little kids = Ayu. First time the little girl is the only one that has a duel on-screen instead of the little boys.

I found an article about Luna (the only female duelists in the Zexal Manga that Yoshida also created):

About Luna's creation:
●Since Zexal has two main characters, Yuma and Astral, Yoshida wanted to give Kaito and Shark someone as a partner as well and that's why Kaito has Haruto and Shark has Luna. The reason? If the good guys have more people, the enemies will look weak.
●Originally Luna was supposed to be a guy (a handsome bodyguard), but Miyoshi told Yoshida to make Luna a girl.
●Miyoshi says that he would have been okay with Luna being a guy, but the manga completely lacked females dueling and that's why he thought Luna should be a girl.
●Yoshida admits that if he were left alone female characters wouldn't appear in the story.
●The image Yoshida had in his mind when creating Luna was a night scene where the full moon illuminates and watches over the quiet sea. Of course Luna=moon and Shark=sea.
●The name "Luna" came from Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon where the word "lunatic" was used.

Wow. I'm surprised that he would even admit that, but this does explain a lot about the later half of 5D's, Zexal and probably any issues with female characters in the Zexal manga.

That was a big "Oooohhhh.. so that's why..." moment for me.
I wonder if Yoshida is a fully-fledged misogynist. There are some cases, like the literary masterpiece Of Mice and Men, in which degradation of women supported the theme of the work, but in the case of everything Yoshida has worked on related to Yugioh, it decreased the quality of the series, so he does have some old-fashioned mindset.

Is actully surprising to see that Yoshida is acknowledged his mistreat toward female characters in Yu GI Oh. Now all he have to do is to develop Luna a bit more.

He didn't acknowledge his mistreatment of female characters, he just said that if it were up to him he wouldn't use any. There's a strong difference; it would seem he sees nothing wrong with this.

It's really disappointing he doesn't care about including any female characters. Thank goodness Miyoshi's around to try to balance him out at least! (though I do wonder why they decided to make a character from scratch, rather than just carry Rio over from the anime?)

This guy either has some strange problem with women as a whole or only with female anime heroines who can play card games. ಠ_ಠ

It's the usual "Female characters are usually delegated to side characters or **** and ass in Shounen" issue. It'd be better off to call out the entire industry and social "norms" and whatnot.

Now I'm imagining what would've happened if we'd actively put Yuzu through the usual YGO torture chamber of electrocution, wall slamming, being burned alive, etc.

And there it is. He all but straight up admit's he's a misogynist. Not that I didn't figure this out a long time ago .. but the nerve of this bastard.
