The production also has that nostalgic sound to me (especially the instrumental bridge) and when you watch the video everything goes perfectly together. Some people say it sounds like an unfinished demo with a 'poor production' cause (I guess) they were expecting it to be a typical pop song like 80% of those that we hear on mainstream radios, but like Rihanna said she wanted to try new things and express herself creatively with no boundaries on this album.
Also the song is repetitive but each lyric is powerful (kinda like in WFL & Diamonds) and it's very patriotic so I think it was intended to repeat the same lyrics many times, it's like an anthem. It's a much more meaningful & powerful song than what people think, they're just not used to this type of song coming from Rihanna, I guess.
