However, in the context of most pop songs and this game, melody is the same verse to verse. In this game, we can't hear whatever melody or other musical ideas you have in your head, and in order to show that you understand verses are the same in a song meter should be consistent. Mariah Carey is not every singer.

I agree completely, especially with the part about how we can't 'hear' the contestant's song. BUT, if you write your rhythm well, we can read the melodic changes. For example, y'all sing along to this:
Verse 1:
Na na no no, na na nee
Na na no no no!
Na na no no, na na nee
Na na no no no!
Some chorus, etc. etc., and then later:
Verse 2:
Na na no no, na na nee
Na na no no no, nee, nee, nee!
Na nee na nee na nee no--
Na nee na nee na nee no!!
That second verse deviates a lot from verse 1, but it adheres to its
own new rhythm, so the melodic change is clear to me. I wrote songs like this for my season and the judges apparently understood what I was doing.
However, I agree with Tymps' general sentiment that for some judges this is hard to hear, so it may be a risky move. So I guess proceed with caution.
