Male artists are more basic than ever, pop girls keep releasing trash although they're at least more interesting.
The only male artists to do anything interesting in the mainstream recently have been Gotye, Frank Ocean, Hozier and now The Weeknd. It's always either European indie one hit wonders or progressive R&B stars.
